Small Business Plan and Factors to Consider

1. How valuable is your time?

If you are starting a home-based business that is very labour intensive you must consider this. How many hours of work or how many widgets do you have to sell to pay yourself a certain wage?, what wage our ynu worth? Perhaps you can contract out portions of the work or service to other providers in your industry, that way you can specialized on your area of expertise and become more productive. You may only be assembling or delivering an item that you buy parts for from other suppliers, there may be a piece of your product or distribution that someone else can do because they have the current facilities and/or equipment. The portions are a high cost of running a business, in the beginning you can lower your fixed costs and some of your risk by not purchasing everything up front and using vendors of other contractors until you build a steady cash-flow and preferred reputation that it makes sense to carry these costs on your own.

2. Do you need to have a separate location for the business?

If you can just have your own office in your home or a small storage area that you can get authorized by city bylaw officials for your business then that is great. You may look into off-site storage or you may have to seek out your own stand-alone location. Be very considerate though of costs of leasing or purchasing other locations and all the facilities, insurance and supplies you will need to go along with this. If you business needs to be in a high-traffic area than this could be quite costly and you should ensure you can reasonable operate for a least a year in this location in order to drive profits or you may consider a more cost-effective location. All leases are different and all commercial properties have their own unique advantages and owners to deal with.

3. How will this affect your current family life plan?

If you start your own business at home are you going to be bothered by others, do you have a separate area where you can close and door and be undisturbed. Are others going to be disappointed or unattended to because of your business, is that fair to them? or is that a necessity you will have to deal with. You will have to have a discussion with other members of your family before going ahead.

4. Are there other resources that you can utilize in your community?

Sometimes you might be surprised that there are other resources in your community that would help you build your business. This could be other retired people that have already had a business similar to yours, an industry association that is helpful, a group of like-minded members, customer with problems, investors or groups that are interested in financing or contributing other services to your business.

5. Is starting your own home-based business the best option?

When I say this I mean, maybe you could start a franchise instead, maybe you could be a partner for an existing company, you could be a contractor for a company in this location, there are numerous other possibilities besides going it alone and starting a completely new business from scratch.
