Challenges

One of the challenges of today's markets is that there seems to be more periods of consolidation between vertical moves. Of course it depends upon your timeframe but there definitely seems a lot more pauses in activity.

This brings with it the requirement for discretionary traders to stay focused while they are waiting for a trade to develop. The old saw: "Being flat is a position" comes to mind. It's hard to do if you have the mindset of trying to make a daily profit target.

You can take from the market only what it is willing to give. Forcing trades will not make the market play nice.

This morning's (London time) Light Crude chart had a good early move and then nothing good for 6 hours. Without some sort of computerised assistance in identifying that the trade was setting up, the second trade was hard to catch.

TIPS FOR INCREASING YOUR ONLINE SALES FROM ETSY'S GEORGINA BLAIN

Last night's E-commerce Excellence talk was a resounding success. The event was held at McQueen, a cool restaurant/bar/club in the heart of Shoreditch.

It was great to see so many talented designers networking and sharing information and ideas with each other, some of whom had already set up their own e-commerce website and others were already Etsy sellers or sold through other websites. The common factor was that everyone wanted to increase their online sales but weren't sure how to go about it.

Etsy's UK Marketing Manager, Georgina Blain, shared with us her expertise on how to maximize online sales.
Her top five tips were:-
  1. Your product photos need to be good - they are your main selling tool so poor images will mean poor sales.
  2. Tag your photos with descriptions your customers are likely to use if looking to buy your type of product , otherwise your product won't show up in searches.
  3. Give clear descriptions of your product so customers know exactly what they are buying
  4. Important to build a relationship with your customer - tell a story behind your products and make sure you highlight any interesting facts.
  5. Buyers won't just come to your product or website - you have to spend time on your own marketing and  PR. Send press releases and good images to relevant media - social media sites are a very useful tool to build followers and brand loyalty.
Alison Lewy also pointed out that before you decide which website to sell through it is important to research and think about the websites your target customer is likely to visit. Websites have various pricing policies so make sure you understand what you are committing to.

SBFF

Every author has a favorite character whether they want to ‘fess up to it or not. Mine is Claire Vargas, the snarky best friend from my Zellie Wells books.

Now, mysnarky best friend would say that I’m most like Zellie – Zel’s an awkward, kinda, sorta brave pastor's daughter and I attended A LOT of church when I was a teen – but I identify with Claire more. She was the easiest character for me to write.

I like to say that I started out as a Zellie and ended up as a Claire. How cool for me that I got to create them both.

Being a heroine is serious business, especially in a YA paranormal romance.

You find out you have powers.

You are not awesome at them.

You’re constantly embarrassing yourself in front of the boy you like.

He secretly thinks you’re amazing, but you don’t get to find that out for five more chapters.

One or both of your parents may be dead. If they aren’t dead, then they just don’t get you.

You’re in high school.

That’s not to say that a PNR YA heroine has to be a depressed, introverted, self-hugging Debbie Downer and can’t be funny, but girlfriend’s got a lot on her plate.

SBFF (Snarky Best Friend Forevah) to the rescue!

Need to make a move at a party, but are too mortified to talk to THE boy? SBFF will deflect attention off of you with her killer dance moves and saucy talk.

Got a ballroom full of innocent bystanders unaware that you are about to have a deadly showdown with evil spirits? SBFF says, “It’s karaoke time.”

Involved in a love triangle? Let SBFF take one of those fiiiiine lads off your hands.

When Zellie finally reveals that she has visions of the future and knows how people are going to die, Claire’s first reaction to the news is, “Have you seen my death?  Do I look hot? Who comes to my funeral?”

What she’s really saying is, “You’re my best friend and I already knew you were a freak. Who cares? That’s how we roll.”

Claire meddles. She jokes. She quips.  She says the right wrong thing at the right wrong time.

She loves Zellie like a sister.

Claire’s super power is that she lacks embarrassment and she will only use it for good.

Without Claire, Zellie wouldn’t be as believable a character. Readers, just like in real life, learn about a person through their relationships with their friends and family. Even with all the heavy stuff going on in Zellie’s life, because of Claire we know that she’s got a sense of humor, that she’s loyal, and that she’s capable of acting exactly her age. Through Zellie we learn that Claire would do anything for her, even when she’s cracking wise.

And she’ll do that anything wearing a micro-mini and expensive sunglasses.

It’s the SBFF way.

EXITs Stage Left

I've had a few emails about EXITS. We've spoken about exits a lot. If you put EXITS into the Google search box on the lower right column of this blog you'll get a list and links to the posts.

Where to EXIT is dependent on your style. I trade in the direction of the trend. Whether I'm All Out or Scale Out, I like to take profits as I go, buying pullbacks and exiting at the peaks of thrusts. Others may want to hold onto the position until they identify that the trend is over or until a specific optimised target is reached.

There is no right answer. You can use a trailing stop of some kind too. It depends on style. It depends on back testing. You can use an indicator that hooks back such as a CCI. There are a myriad of EXITS. Its a matter of marrying your style, your perception of risk and your trade management plan. Back testing will show you what meets your profitability and emotional requirements.

The 3 point Renko DAX chart below uses a secondary invisible data feed to help manage trades. You can see the entries and exits. These are the result of Walk Forward Optimisation analysis. This is hugely useful for both discretionary and auto trading alike.
